The Garden Song
03:42
|

* (These words were written by Wilma Kenny)
Comfrey Chamomile Thyme and Golden Cup
Mother sends me down to gather up
Lilly Of The Valley Rue and Daffodil
Monkshood and Foxglove these can kill
Mother knows the difference Mother knows them all
She plants in the spring and gathers in the fall
Midsummer Solstice come and build a fire
It's older than the churchyard and taller than a pyre
It's old as the hills oh it's old as the Moon
Light it up at midnight let it burn till noon
Well the preacher doesn't like it wants to make it part
Of his Sunday service and take away the heart
People called us witches and turned the World about
They feared our quiet power and tore our gardens out
They pulled up all the roots and they threw away the seeds
They burned the harmless flowers and let in the weeds
Oh they burned a thousand women took away the child
They thought we had forgotten they thought the flowers wild
Well we searched them out again and we brought them back at night
We seldom spoke the reason but knew that we were right
We whispered the wisdom and sought out the lore
We traded roots and seedlings we planted more and more
So see our pretty gardens shining in the sun
We're bringing back the witches one by one
We're bringing back the witches one by one
We're bringing back the witches one by one

The Best We Can
04:11
|
|||
Late August flowers bloom in the fall we'll dig those roots
We'll do what we've always done we'll do the best we can
Well these days they try to hang us with their lies and fines
These days they try to burn us will all the papers signed
But they won't ever win the game they play
'Cause you can't get milk at the bull's house
You can't win a battle against yourself
So dig deep deep down oh and hold this ground
So dig deep deep down and hold this ground
Well there's power over and power from within
We've always got that choice no matter where we've been
Ya there's power over and power from within
We've always got that choice no matter where we've been
So dig deep deep down oh and hold this ground
Dig deep deep down and hold this ground
Late August flowers bloom in the fall we'll dig those roots
We'll do what we've always done we'll do the best we can
And Ya there's power over and power from within
We've always got that choice no matter where we've been
So dig deep deep down oh and hold this ground
Dig deep deep down and hold this ground
Ya there's power over and power from within
We've always got that choice no matter where we've been
Ya there's power over and power from within
We've always got that choice no matter where we've been

It's not to say it's easy no not by any means
The anger's just as valid as anything else we feel
It's built up a many great things and it's torn them to the ground
So go on let it build you up and don't you let it tear you down
Well I can't keep my heart from breaking when the lines in the sky
Leave my head aching and I can't keep my head from shaking
When there's more than enough but some don't want to share it and
We've been born in interesting times indeed
I think that simplicity is underrated and there's little that we really need
We're as free as we choose to be
We're as free as we choose to be
Well if all things balance I doubt the dark will cease to be
But maybe its' only job is to call us to our light
So dig your toes down into the Earth
Let the river run through your hair
Show a little gratitude
And they'll give you all the answers that you already knew
We're as free as we choose to be
We're as free as we choose to be

Nanokossaay
04:58
|
|||
I bid my dear a due said I hope I'll see you soon
A teardrop in my eye bags packed by the departure sign
I drove out to the east to the black black waters up in old Haunted Harrison
But I didn't stay long by the dark lakeside
Had a Lilly in my heart and a thorn in my mind
Northbound I drove through the valley of the Wild Rose
I was headed for hope to go and yell in the streets
But I missed that turn no more signs could I see
But I found an old burnt down town
All the mines had long shut down no
I never made it to Hope that day but I
Well I found it anyway
My name is Nanokossaay been taken in by the Indians up on the hill
I came back to ask a blessing of you and learned a lesson or two so
Little Hummingbird is gonna fly away
Little Hummingbird is gonna fly
After oh a long sweet stay
Said I well I'll be moving on again
Back to where I'd been before and where I never had
Up on the hillside I did hide
And I saw the biggest rainbow that I ever did see
And I wore it like a crown that summer's eve
And I
I sat naked in the lake that night
Held by the deep dark sparkle sky and I
I prayed
Well I hope I make it where I'm going and I hope I
Make it back too
My name is Nanokossaay been taken in by the Indians up on the hill
I came back to ask a blessing of you and learned a lesson or two so
Little Hummingbird is gonna fly away
Little Hummingbird is gonna fly

North

Late last night headlights pointing at the deep north night
No radio only a cat for company a cat for company
The morning shone on the grocery store parking lot
Gotta pay my way gotta pay my way but I can't take
A poor man's last change
Late last night the forest kept on burning people keep on learning and
Late last night well the moon had turned red the moon had turned red
Well the old man in the hat with the crosses came and sat
He said "If you play I will sing and dance"
And then he broke it down damn he broke it down
He said sweet chariots gonna take him home
So many signs on the highway for all the missing women
So many hearts break they are all our sisters
And it seems a little wack we still gotta watch our backs
In this day and age oh I pray for change
Late last night headlights pointing at the deep north night
No radio only a cat for company a cat for company
Well a feather washed up on the shore of the lake oh I'll
Take it with me hope it's no mistake
And I'll bring it to the one I love I'll never know
And it's perfect as it is it's perfect as it is
Late last night well the forest kept on burning people keep on learning and
Late last night the moon had turned red the moon had turned red

Nothing On Those Guys
03:33
|
|||
Well they told old Victor he couldn't build a shed on his own land
Well Victor said "To hell with what they say" and he built that shed anyways
He said "If anyone comes around and asks, I'll tell them it's for sale for a million and a half"
So many years later Victor's dead but out in the yard stands Victor's shed
Early one morning my grandpa went hunting out in the bush he picked a man up thumbin'
Well the man took his gun and he held him up said "Drive me to the nearest liquor store"
Well when they got there my grandpa grabbed the man and he threw him through the windshield
And he got his gun back he got his gun back said "I'll shoot ya if you move a muscle"
Well we don't got nothin' we don't got nothin' on those guys
No we don't got nothin' we don't got nothin' on those guys
Well Old Lina Emery lives in the mountains she's the grandmother goddess of the garden
She points her cane at the weeds that we can eat smuggles wine across the border in the back seat
And since 1930 Lina's been around but she'll scare off any bully in town
She'll be dancing in the kitchen in her slippered feet with a twinkle in her eye and no teeth in her smile
No we don't got nothin' we don't got nothin' on those guys
We don't got nothin' we don't got nothin' on those guys

Dandelion Thistles
03:54
|
|||
She steps from the forests' edge dainty hooves and a mama's pledge
She's attentive she's aware she's the audience and only one there
Eyes of Lapis eyes of Jade well oh I hope she'll never be caged
What ya doin' Lady Loon you bathe your feathers in the afternoon
You're diving deep with your lover with your lover Lady Loon
Oh I wish that I could be more like you
Dandelion Thistles are growing up up up upon this cliff
And it's a sweet duality that never seems to quit
Reflections are deceiving the current is too
'Cause she'll pull you down into her depths and she'll show no mercy to you
So hey there little baby looking up at me hey there little baby keep on swimming upstream
'Cause there's bodies on the river bodies on the river bodies on the river bed
Ya there's bodies on the river bed bodies on the river
And she's also got to feed
Dandelion Thistles are growing up up up upon this cliff
And it's a sweet duality that never seems to quit

Beets and Bread
04:13
|
|||
Old creaky cupboard doors and that old squeaky drawer
Bottles and jars all full of potions and lore
For the morning sunlight on your pocket lint
The kindness of strangers when they take you in
For the silent song on the forests' lips
The joke the cold creek cracks when you can't take a hint
Well there ain't no balm for that
And there ain't no tea for that
There sure ain't a song for that just a
Pat on the back
For my sisters' laughter and the things she said
Her back porch coffee and her beets and bread
For his silhouette out by the old shed
And the song sung gently up against my neck
Old creaky cupboard doors and that old squeaky drawer
Bottles and jars all full of potions and lore
But there ain't no balm for that
And there ain't no tea for that
There sure ain't a song for that just a
Pat on the back
No there ain't no balm for that
And there ain't no tea for that
There sure ain't a song for that just a
Pat on the back
